Italy’s 2026 payroll tax adjustment and relief recovery

A payroll tax adjustment reconciles provisional withholding and relief with actual income. For 2026 income, the employer normally adjusts at the end of 2026 or by February 2027. This is separate from a 730 return settling the previous tax year.

Why entitlement changes

Additional jobs, ordinary taxable increases or other relevant income can change total income and the relief due. The employer estimates during the year and corrects the amount when final facts are available.

CU 2026 certifies 2025 income. CU 2027 will certify 2026 income. Not every lump sum enters ordinary total income: TFR normally follows separate taxation, so it should not be treated as an ordinary salary increase.

Recovery above €60

For non-entitled tax wedge relief exceeding €60, the withholding employer recovers the amount in ten equal monthly instalments from the first useful pay after the adjustment. Up to €60, that special instalment rule does not apply. It is not a rule for every tax debt.

For a full year with sufficient tax capacity, €33,000 final total income gives €875 theoretical extra credit. If payroll already applied €1,000, the difference is €125, or ten €12.50 instalments in this employer adjustment.

Payroll adjustment versus 730 settlement

The employer performs annual adjustment even without a 730 return. For a 730 settlement, the Revenue Agency makes the accounting result, form 730-4, available to the withholding employer after the return is transmitted.

Refunds or deductions usually start from the first useful payroll after receipt, generally from July. Redditi PF uses its own payment and refund procedures. Inform the employer about relevant other income or request suspension of uncertain relief, then check entitlement in the return.
