Italy’s employee tax-free threshold in 2026: €8,500 explained

Italy’s employee no tax area in 2026 normally reaches €8,500 of income, assuming full-year employment and no other relevant income. It is not an allowance subtracted from every salary: it results from the employment credit offsetting gross IRPEF. It is neither €8,500 of gross annual salary nor an exemption from social contributions.
The calculation: €8,500 × 23% = €1,955
For 2026 income, TUIR article 13 provides a €1,955 employment credit where total income is up to €15,000, prorated by the employment period. At the first-band rate of 23%, €8,500 produces exactly €1,955 gross IRPEF.
The credit can eliminate that tax. An unused portion is not paid as a refund simply because tax capacity is insufficient. That is the practical meaning of the threshold, rather than a universal contractual gross salary limit.
Three IRPEF-only examples
Illustration of ordinary IRPEF and the employment credit only: 365 days, employment as the only income, no other deductions or credits. It is not a take-home pay calculation: contributions, local taxes and cash benefits are excluded.
| Assumed taxable and total income | Gross IRPEF at 23% | IRPEF after employment credit |
|---|---|---|
| €8,000 | €1,840 | €0 |
| €8,500 | €1,955 | €0 |
| €9,000 | €2,070 | €115 |
Gross salary and days can change the comparison
In the calculator’s basic profile, employee IVS contributions reduce gross salary before IRPEF. Additional funds, deductions and other income can change the comparison further. Do not compare an offer’s gross salary directly with €8,500.
Qualifying days are separate from part-time working hours. A relationship shorter than a full year can reduce the credit, subject to statutory minimums of €690 for permanent employment or €1,380 for fixed-term employment within the up-to-€15,000 band. Thus €8,500 is not a universal threshold for every short contract.
Zero IRPEF does not mean zero contributions or automatic allowances
Circular 4/E distinguishes the ordinary credit, trattamento integrativo and tax-free cash tax wedge allowance. Up to €15,000, the supplementary allowance has its own test comparing gross tax on qualifying work income against the employment credit reduced by €75, prorated by days. Zero final IRPEF does not always exclude it, but does not make it automatic.
The cash tax wedge allowance has different conditions, including total income and annualising employment income to choose its percentage. Social contributions remain separate. Read the employment relief guide before adding theoretical amounts together.
What to check in the CU certificate and payslip
Compare employment income, certified days, gross tax and recognised credits. If you have other CU certificates or income, check the total rather than one employer’s figure. CU 2026 certifies 2025 income; 2026 income will appear in CU 2027.
Enter actual gross annual salary and assumptions in the calculator; do not enter €8,500 as presumed take-home pay. This guide concerns ordinary employment. Pensions, self-employment and special regimes need their own checks.
Frequently asked questions
Are there no deductions below €8,500? ▾
The threshold concerns IRPEF under the stated assumptions. It does not eliminate social contributions or apply identically to every contract duration and income type.
Does €8,500 mean gross salary or taxable income? ▾
In this example it is taxable and total income, with employment as the only income. Gross salary includes employee contributions and can differ.
Do I receive €1,200 whenever I pay no IRPEF? ▾
The supplementary allowance has its own conditions. Check income, days and its tax-capacity test; it is not an automatic refund of unused credit.
